Beckham targeting MLS trophy

David Beckham has fended off questions about his future and says his sole focus is to win silverware with LA Galaxy.

Beckham fought off lower back spasms to contribute a vital assist in Thursday’s 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls, which led his side into the Western Conference final.

Beckham, the subject of heavy interest from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain in the final year of his contract with the Galaxy, says he feels compelled to win silverware with the MLS franchise.

“Right now I’m a Galaxy player, so that’s all I can say,” Beckham told reporters. “I’m enjoying myself.”

“I want to win a trophy for this club. I think the way they treat the team, the way they treat the players and look after the players I think it’s the best in the league. So we owe them that.”

“People have talked about my future for about 10 years,” Beckham added. “When I moved to Madrid in the first year, I think I was going to Chelsea about five or six times. So I’ve had that throughout my career.”

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena levelled some flattery of his own at his star after a game in which Beckham assisted Mike Magee’s opening goal and later drew a penalty, which Landon Donovan converted.

“He’s a player with an unbelievable desire to win and compete,” Arena said. “I think when we went down a goal, I think David helped. And his energy in the second half, earning that penalty kick, it was all David. I think David was an inspiration to our team.”

With the Western Conference final against Real Salt Lake looming on Sunday, Arena had no doubt Beckham would play.

“If anybody can do it, it’s David,” Arena said.

Donovan admired Beckham’s desire to remain on the field after suffering what the Galaxy called a back spasm in the first half.

“I’ve seen that guy go through a lot, and I think they would have had to carry him off the field,” Donovan said. “I don’t think he was coming off, and it shows a lot about his character.”
