Anderlecht captain Lucas Biglia will undergo surgery this week to treat a shoulder problem, the club’s official website has confirmed.

Biglia, who emerged as a transfer target for both Liverpool and AC Milan in the off-season, missed Wednesday’s Belgian Cup loss to Rupel Boom and will now be absent for a further four months as he recovers from the operation.

A statement on the club’s website reads: “The Argentine has been struggling for a while with his shoulder, and surgery was inevitable.”

The 25-year-old will return to his homeland for the procedure and will also complete his rehabilitation there.

Anderlecht sit top of Europa League Group L, and host Sturm Graz on Thursday knowing victory will ensure their progression to the knockout stages of the tournament.
