Competition: A-League

Market: Adelaide United win

Odds: 19/20 @ Pribet

Two camps who are firmly scrapping it out at opposite ends of the A-League standings, Adelaide will welcome Wellington to the Coopers Stadium on Friday morning.

Starting with the hosts, while Adelaide might have got February underway with a dramatic 3-2 defeat at the hands of Newcastle, Airton Andrioli’s side have proven that result was nothing more than a minor blip. Laying down a real marker last month as they stormed their way to an emphatic 4-0 romp at home against Perth, the Reds have registered seven points from their previous three A-League appearances. Sat firmly in the driving seat to punch another play-off ticket this season, Adelaide can also shockingly move within touching distance of the AFC Champions League spots this weekend. With their sights now firmly set on mounting a genuine silver medal charge, Andrioli’s men will be smelling a golden opportunity when they return to the Coopers Stadium on Friday morning. Pencilled in as a standout contender here, Adelaide have have suffered just a sole defeat from any of their previous eight consecutive A-League showdowns – a run that stems all the way back to January 4th.

As for the visitors, while Adelaide might find the mood in their camp at a continued high, Wellington are enduring a public crisis. Firmly sat rock-bottom of the A-League standings, the Phoenix have rightfully come under a huge amount of scrutiny. Signing off February with a woeful performance as they slumped to a 5-0 drumming at home against Auckland, Chris Greenacre’s side should be bracing themselves for what will be another stern examination here. Likewise, last seen falling to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Sydney, Friday’s guests have failed to win any of their previous six consecutive A-League appearances (four defeats, two draws). Likewise, putting just a single victory on the board over the past two months, Wellington have continued to show a string of glaring issues at both ends of the pitch. In fact, shipping 39 goals in their 19 A-League showdowns so far this season, Greenacre’s side hold the worst-defensive tally among Australia’s elite.
