Competition: La Liga

Market: Athletic Bilbao win

Odds: 8/11 @ BetUS

Looking to extend on their Champions League charge this weekend, Athletic Bilbao will travel to a struggling Granada on Sunday afternoon.

Starting with the hosts, although Granada might have punched a La Liga return for this season, Alexander Medina’s men have failed to find any kind of stability this time around. Already battling it out at the foot of the table and tipped as a leading contender to be hit with an immediate Segunda return in 2024, the Nasrids have continued to show some rather glaring issues on either side of November’s international break. Last seen getting hit with a routine 2-0 defeat at the hands of Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid, Granada should be bracing themselves for another stern test here. Signing off November with a nightmare performance as they slumped to a shock 3-1 drumming against Alaves, the Andalusia-based outfit have collected just seven points from their first 15 La Liga appearances this season. Likewise, without a top-flight victory to their name since back on August 26th, Medina’s side are rightfully tipped as an underdog contender when they return to the Nuevo Los Carmenes this weekend.

As for the visitors, although Athletic Bilbao might have been heartbroken last season as they missed out on the chance to book a European return, the Lions have come flying out of the traps this time around. Putting in a thumping performance last weekend as they stormed their way to a 4-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano, Ernesto Valverde’s side now have their sights firmly set on mounting a genuine Champions League charge in the New Year. Mustering 10 points from their previous four La Liga appearances over the past month, the one-time Barcelona boss has also seen his squad gain a reputation for their free-scoring performances in the final third. Heading into November’s international break with a 4-3 win against Celta Vigo, Bilbao have bagged 12 strikes in their last four showdowns. Given what has been a huge recent gulf in class between Sunday’s opponents, Valverde’s high-flying squad should be relishing a trip to the Nuevo Los Carmenes this weekend.
