Looking to take another giant leap towards this season’s A-League crown, Auckland will travel to Newcastle on Sunday morning.
Starting with the hosts, while Newcastle might be seeking a minor miracle in the race to claim a play-off ticket this season, the Jets are enjoying what has become quite the purple patch. Putting in what was a stellar performance last time out as they cruised their way to a 3-1 victory at home against Brisbane, the mood in Robert Stanton’s camp will certainly be at a red-hot high. Continuing to climb up the A-League table, Newcastle have remarkably won each of their previous three consecutive appearances and are enjoying by far their most fruitful spell of the campaign. With their recent purple patch underlined by a 3-0 romp against Melbourne Victory on February 8th, Sunday’s hosts have also found a major clinical edge in the final third. In fact, Stanton’s side have won their last three A-League outings by an aggregate score of 8-2. Likewise, playing out back-to-back 2-2 draws against Central Coast and Perth on either side of opening February, Newcastle have recorded at least a pair of goals in all of their previous five A-League appearances.
As for the visitors, while Auckland might have only made their A-League debut this season, the Black Knights have only continued to shatter a string of records. Although Steve Corica’s side might have been forced to settle for an astonishing 4-4 stalemate at home against Adelaide last weekend, the former Sydney boss has seen his high-flying squad gain a string of plaudits. In fact, opening up this weekend’s fixtures holding a commanding eight-point buffer at the top of the table, Sunday’s guests have also suffered just a single A-League defeat since way back on December 21st. Signing off February with a stellar 6-1 romp against Wellington, Auckland have registered 13 points from their previous five A-League showdowns. Notching 10 goals in just their previous two appearances, Corica’s side have also secured consecutive A-League victories away from the Mount Smart Stadium since November. Two camps who are enjoying their own incredibly flurries, we could be treated to an enjoyable contest on Sunday morning.
