Looking to make a much-needed return to winning ways this weekend, Derry City will make the trip to leading relegation scrappers UC Dublin.
Starting with the hosts, while UC Dublin might have put in a largely rugged display on their return from the international break last weekend, it was another night to forget for the Blues. Eventually getting hit with a 2-1 loss away at St. Patrick’s, it is no secret that Andrew Myler’s men are tipped as the leading relegation pick this season. Although they might have managed to pick up a much-welcomed 1-0 win away at the Finn Harps last month, it appears that was just an ever-so-minor boost for the Students. Mustering just nine points since making their Premier Division return, UC sit rock-bottom of the table and knowing that they face a huge task on Friday night. Suffering a woeful 7-1 drumming when they last faced off against this weekend’s opponents back on April 22nd, Myler’s downbeat squad should be bracing themselves.
As for the visitors, while Derry City might still find themselves sat in that final European spot, Ruaidhrí Higgins’ side are in the midst of an extended rut. Having to settle for a 1-1 draw at home against Drogheda on their return from June’s international break, the Candystripes have now remarkably failed to win any of their last seven Premier Division contests. Knowing that they must pick up a boost when they’re handed a golden chance on Friday night, Derry should at least be boosted by a rampant record against the leading relegation scrapper. Including that 7-1 romp when they welcomed UC to the Brandywell Stadium back in April, it should be noted that Higgins’ squad are unbeaten in their last seven meetings against the Students, recording six victories. While the European contenders might be enduring a worrying rut, we’re backing an away victory here.
