In their first match of what is being billed as a new generation for Germany, the former World champions will host Serbia on Wednesday night.
Starting with the hosts, after announcing that the likes of Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels will no long feature for the national side, Joachim Low has really turned his attention to the youth. With only one player over the age of 30 called up for his squad, the new group of German stars must really find a way to improve on their sluggish 12 months. The Whites finished bottom at both the World Cup and were also relegated after finishing behind France and the Netherlands in the inaugural UEFA Nations League. A side that have recorded just two clean sheets in their last 12 matches, Wednesday could prove to be another tough test at the Volkswagen Arena.
As for the visitors, picking up a 4-1 win over Lithuania and marching through the Nations League unbeaten, Serbia confirmed their promotion to League B. Yet to be beaten in any of their outings since failing to make it out of the group stage in Russia, the mood in Mladen Krstajić’s camp will certainly be on a high. In a squad that holds a string of Premier League stars, the Reds have gained a reputation for their attacking style of play. Now bagging six goals in their last two appearances, one man to watch will be Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. The Serbian marksman has 23 goals in 46 appearances for the national team.
