Former Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro believes Spain remain favourites to defend their European crown in Poland and Ukraine next year.

The 38-year-old, who retired from football earlier this year, applauded the progress of the Germany national team, but noted that Spain’s recent success will give them the upper hand at Euro 2012.

“The evolution of Germany is impressive and, just like many fans, I really like to watch this team,” Cannavaro told German magazine Kicker.

“But for me Germany are not the biggest favourite, but Spain. They know how to win a tournament, and that is a very important advantage in decisive situations.”

“Moreover, Spain still do not give the impression of being tired of winning titles.”

The European and world champions have been drawn with Italy, Ireland and Croatia in Group C of the Euro 2012 finals, which start on June 8.
