Chelsea plan major summer clear-out

Didier Drogba is one of the players thought to have been put up for sale by Chelsea for this summer. The Ivorian striker, who was sent off in Chelsea’s Champions League final defeat to Manchester United, has spent four years at Stamford Bridge but has often spoken about his desire to leave London.

It would appear that Chelsea have finally run out of patience with their superstar striker who has become Chelsea’s all-time top scorer in European competition. As of yet, no suitors have been mentioned by the press, however it is though that a host of clubs will be more than willing to take Didier Drogba off Chelsea’s hands.

According to the English tabloids, Drogba could be followed out the door by Ricardo Carvalho, Juliano Belletti, Wayne Bridge, Claude Makelele, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Steve Sidwell, Florent Malouda, Claudio Pizarro and Andriy Shevchenko as Peter Kenyon has revealed that some players will be sold to make room and raise funds for the arrival of “star names”. According to the Times, the Chelsea director said that:

“We’re bringing in a couple [of players] because I think our squad is too big at the moment, so we’ll be looking at the net spend. But it’s quality we’re after, not quantity, and it’s a very thin market we’re operating in. It’s fair to say they won’t be cheap.

“We’re looking at players who are star names or have the potential to be star names and that’s the key.”
