Nottingham Forest have completed and confirmed the signing of Taiwo Awoniyi from Union Berlin. The 24-year-old striker has become the most expensive signing ever for the newly promoted Premier League side with the fee reportedly set at around €20 million, having signed a five-year contract.
Awoniyi joined Liverpool from the Imperial Academy in his homeland of Nigeria in 2015, but due to issues with the work permit, he never played for the six-time European champions. Instead, he had numerous loan spells while on the books of the Merseysiders, playing for FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron, KAA Gent, Mainz 05 and Union Berlin, before making the move to the latter permanent in 2021. In 2021/22, he scored 20 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions, helping Union finish fifth in the Bundesliga and book a place in the Europa League qualifications for the first time since 2001/02.
Speaking to Forest’s official website, Awoniyi expressed excitement at joining the club and the prospect of fulfilling his dream to play in the Premier League.
