Crystal Palace 1-0 Wolves: Guessand strikes late on to boost embattled Glasner

Evann Guessand scored his first goal for Crystal Palace in the 90th minute as they eased the pressure on Oliver Glasner with a 1-0 win over 10-man Wolves.

Glasner had come under fire from his own supporters in the build-up to Sunday’s match after telling them to “stay humble”, following a miserable run of form that had threatened to drag Palace into the relegation battle.

The Eagles were comfortably second-best throughout the first half, despite Yeremy Pino striking the post following a well-worked corner routine.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde tested Dean Henderson on two occasions, then the Palace captain guessed correctly to save Tolu Arokodare’s 43rd-minute penalty after Adam Wharton felled Mateus Mane inside the area.

Palace were arguably fortunate to see Will Hughes avoid a second yellow card, too, but Ladislav Krejci had no such luck when he kicked the ball away in the 61st minute, with his second caution reducing Wolves to 10 men.

The visitors held firm until the final minute of the 90, but substitute Guessand met Tyrick Mitchell’s cross on the slide to beat Jose Sa and clinch three much-needed points for Palace.

Data Debrief: Henderson on the spot as Krejci dismissal costs Wolves

Sunday’s game turned on two key incidents, the first being Henderson’s penalty save to deny Arokodare.

Henderson – who was making his 150th Premier League appearance – has now saved five of the 15 penalties he has faced in the competition.

His 33.3% penalty save ratio is the joint-best among all goalkeepers to face at least 15 spot-kicks in Premier League history, alongside Mark Bosnich (6/18).

The other moment that went against Wolves was Krejci’s red card, their third in the Premier League this season. There were only 196 seconds between his first booking (57:04) and his second (60:20).

Rob Edwards’ strugglers put up a good fight, almost matching Palace for shots (14 to 12) and just edging the expected goals battle (1.68 xG to 1.67), but they are now winless in 16 away Premier League matches (four draws, 12 defeats).
