FC Twente jumped to third in the Eredivisie with a 2-1 win at a 10-man De Graafschap on Wednesday.

Steve McClaren’s men entered the match on the back of three successive defeats, but they were still expected to return to winning ways against the Eredivisie’s bottom side.

De Graafschap shocked their opponents after just two minutes though, with Soufian El Hassnaoui netting an early goal.

Twente responded on 19 minutes thanks to a rare strike from Venezuelan defender Roberto Rosales.

And they took the lead seven minutes after half time when midfielder Leroy Fer netted a crucial goal.

The hosts had Rogier Meijer sent off for a second yellow card on 58 minutes and down a man, they could not find an equaliser.

Twente’s victory lifted them above PSV on goal difference and they are now just two points behind table-toppers AZ Alkmaar.
