Athletic Bilbao defeated Manchester United 3-2 in a dynamic Europa League tie at Old Trafford on Thursday, while Manchester City also lost.

Hosts United took the lead 21 minutes into the round-of-16 first-leg clash, with Wayne Rooney netting after a sparkling run from strike partner Javier Hernandez.

Athletic levelled two minutes before half-time through a headed goal from Spain international forward Fernando Llorente.

Oscar de Marcos put the visitors 2-1 ahead on 72 minutes, guiding a half volley beyond United goalkeeper David de Gea and into the far corner of the net.

And highly rated young forward Iker Muniain made it 3-1 in the 90th minute, benefitting from Rafael’s defensive lapse to pounce after De Gea could only parry de Marcos’ initial strike.

There was still time for Rooney to get a goal back for United from the penalty spot, when de Marcos was deemed to have handled inside the box.

Earlier on Thursday, United’s English Premier League title rivals Manchester City went down 1-0 away to Sporting Lisbon.

Xandao scored the only goal of the game for the Liga Sagres team, sending a clever back heel beyond City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Liga Sagres side Atletico Madrid are well placed to reach the quarter-finals after they defeated Turkish club Besiktas 3-1 at home.

A brace from Eduardo Salvio and Adrian’s goal – all in the first half at Estadio Vicente Calderon – gave Atletico a commanding lead, with Portuguese forward Simao Sabrosa pulling one back for Besiktas against his former club.

David Fuster’s goal helped Greek outfit Olympiakos record a 1-0 win away to the 10 men of Ukrainian side Metalist Kharkiv, who had Edmar Aparesida sent off eight minutes from time.

Joel Matip gave away a penalty and received a straight red card as his Bundesliga team Schalke went down 1-0 away to Dutch club Twente.

Eredivisie leaders AZ Alkmaar were also victorious at home, they beat Serie A side Udinese 2-0 thanks to second-half goals from Maarten Martens and Erik Falkenburg.

Spanish club Valencia, 4-0 up as early as the 55th minute of their match at home to PSV Eindhoven, appeared to be cruising through to the last eight.

But two goals in the last 10 minutes will give the Dutch side hope of over-turning the deficit in the second leg.

Finally, Standard Liege of Belgium played out a 2-2 draw at home to Bundesliga club Hannover, with all the second-leg matches to be played on Thursday.
