Feyenoord sacked coach Gertjan Verbeek because of a series of poor results on Wednesday.

The 46-year-old, who was joined by technical director Peter Bosz and assistant coach Wim Jansen who resigned in sympathy with the coach, has failed to make Feyenoord into title contenders this season where they lie just 12th and were also eliminated from the UEFA Cup in December.

Verbeek, who made his name as coach of Feyenoord rivals Heerenveen, had only been in charge since the beginning of the season. His former assistant Leon Vlemmings will take charge of the club for the moment.

Verbeek is the fourth Dutch First Division coach to lose his job this season, joining Raymond Atteveld (Roda JC), Willem van Hanegem (FC Utrecht) and Hans Westerhof (Vitesse Arnhem).
