Glasner warns Crystal Palace fans not to forget where they came from

Oliver Glasner has warned Crystal Palace fans that have called for his dismissal to “stay humble” and remember where the club was when he took the reins.

Glasner oversaw the first major trophy win in Palace’s history last year, when they defeated Manchester City to lift the FA Cup at Wembley, while they also defeated Liverpool in the Community Shield in August.

But things have soured spectacularly since then, with the Eagles slipping into a battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League after the sales of Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi.

Glasner has already announced he will leave Selhurst Park at the end of the season, but that has not stopped disgruntled supporters from asking for him to depart sooner.

During Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Bosnian side Zrinjski in the Conference League, sections of Palace’s travelling contingent chanted “we want Glasner out.”

And speaking ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Wolves, Glasner risked further division with fans by saying: “They can say and sing whatever they want.

“I know what I am doing. I would say the most important thing is to stay humble. I think it’s the same for the fans.

“Stay humble. Never forget where you’re coming from. I think a few who are so critical in this situation are not humble anymore.

“Forget where you have come from, and usually in life, you are punished for this.”

Glasner also pointed out that he had rejected opportunities to leave the club sooner, and said he had been partly responsible for the club’s best-ever period.

“It would have been quite easy for me to step back earlier; I had many opportunities to be honest. I didn’t do it,” Glasner said.

“I felt responsible for the team – especially for the players.

“I think Crystal Palace have had the best time in their history and I’ve played maybe a small part in these best 18 to 20 months.”

Palace are winless in their last eight Premier League home games (three draws, five defeats), their longest run at Selhurst Park in the top flight since they failed to win any of their first 15 matches at home in 1997-98 (four draws, 11 defeats).

They have, however, won their last five home Premier League games against Wolves, with this their best such run against an opponent in their top-flight history. They last won six consecutive home league games (in any division) against a particular team versus Walsall, between 1977 and 2004.
