Guidolin struggled to watch Milan draw

Udinese boss Francesco Guidolin admitted it was tough to watch his side scrape through to next season’s Champions League on Sunday.

Guidolin’s side needed just a point against champions AC Milan on the final day of the Serie A season to book their spot in the Champions League qualifying stages for next term, and they clung onto a point in nervy fashion, holding on for a 0-0 draw.

The club’s top scorer Antonio Di Natale had the chance to put his side in front with 16 minutes remaining from the penalty spot, but missed, meaning the home fans were forced to agonisingly sit through the dying stages knowing one weak moment could ruin their Champions League dreams.

“After a week of chatter and above all waiting until the evening, we had to suffer and bite our nails throughout,” Guidolin said.

“Di Natale very rarely fails to convert a penalty, so when that happened we realised we really would have to suffer to the bitter end.”

“I thank the players, the club and the fans who suffered along with us. I want to enjoy this night to the full – and it’ll be a long one.”

Udinese made a shocking start to the season, losing their first four matches, making their qualification feats even more remarkable.

The introduction of Mauricio Isla into the team helped Udinese, while the likes of Di Natale and Alexis Sanchez kept the goals coming in.

Guidolin is also hopeful that his side can hang onto their best players, in order to compete in Europe’s top tier to the best of their abilities.

“Isla certainly has a bright future ahead of him. He was carrying a ban from last season and when he came in to change the tactical system, moving Pablo Armero too, we started to climb back,” he said.

“Undoubtedly this lad gives balance, attacking push and is one of the most important pieces in our mosaic.”

“I see no need to take apart the team and nobody is really pushing to do that. I realise some will be sought out by big clubs, but we do not need to sell and hope to be ready for the preliminary round and then the group phase.”
