Heynckes confident in Bayern depth

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has faith in the ability of his squad to cover the loss of Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The Germany international was stretchered off in Bayern’s 3-2 victory over Napoli in the Champions League in midweek, and it was later revealed the 27-year-old had broken his collarbone.

With Schweinsteiger on the sidelines for at least six weeks, Heynckes said the club will feel his loss.

“Losing him is a big blow,” Heynckes said. “He was in peak form, and he’s one of our top personalities.”

“He’s doing relatively well. Obviously, he’s upset at the long lay-off, but he was still in good spirits, because he’s an optimistic guy.”

The likes of David Alaba and Danijel Pranjic may be called upon to fill the hole left by Schweinsteiger’s absence, and Heynckes has confidence in the depth of his squad.

“This season, we’ve already had to cope with losing a world-class player like Arjen Robben, and up to now we’ve done very well,” he said.

“It is time to call on the depth of quality in the squad, and I’m convinced that whatever I choose to do will work out well.”

The Bundesliga leaders travel to take on Augsburg on Sunday, and will look to maintain their four-point cushion at the top of the division.
