Hitzfeld eager to continue as Switzerland boss

Former Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld is hoping to continue as Switzerland boss despite the failed Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

A 2:0 defeat in Wales on Friday meant that Switzerland had missed out on the place at the Euro 2012, adding fuel to speculations that Hitzfeld could leave the post.

However, the experienced coach says he wants to continue the job despite the recent setback.

“After this setback the Swiss Association has given me great confidence,” Hitzfeld told ZDF.

“I have not signed the contract in order to stop now. I enjoy working with the young players. I have motivation and (I am up) for the challenge.”

The German has a contract until 2014 and is likely to lead the Swiss during the World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign.
