Five-cap Socceroo Adrian Madaschi will return to Australia following a decade-long stint overseas to join Melbourne Heart in a 10-week deal.
Madaschi joins A-League club Heart as an injury replacement player for Kliment Taseski, who will miss at least three months due to a foot problem.
With Adrian Zahra still likely to be unavailable for some time, and Curtis Good and Aziz Behich also set to miss crucial matches through international duty, coach John van ‘t Schip feels Madaschi will offer valuable cover at the back.
The central defender spent pre-season training with Melbourne Victory but was unable to secure a contract.
The 29-year-old has played in Italy’s top two divisions and the Scottish Premier League, with his longest spells coming at Partick Thistle and Portosummaga.
