Proud fans greeted the Ivory Coast on their return home, despite a shock loss to Zambia in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba blasted a penalty over the bar in the 70th minute of Sunday’s final, before Zambia went on to claim their maiden crown with an 8-7 penalty shootout win.

Ivory Coast were one of the pre-tournament favourites, but despite the disappointment fans were happy with their team when they arrived in the former capital, Abidjan.

A sign from one fan read: “Bravo Elephants. We are proud of you – appointment in 2013 South Africa.”

Meanwhile, Zambia were given a heroes’ welcome when they arrived in Lusaka, greeted by thousands of screaming fans.

Ivory Coast will have their chance at redemption a year earlier than usual, with the tournament to be played in South Africa next year.

Next year’s Cup of Nations was moved from Libya, who will instead host the 2017 event, and will begin on January 19, 2013.
