Kakuta denies DR Congo switch

Bolton Wanderers forward Gael Kakuta has declared he will not switch nationality to play for the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Kakuta is of Congolese descent and there have been reports that newly-appointed coach Claude Le Roy was close to snatching the 20-year-old, who has represented France at youth level.

But the Chelsea loanee said he has not had any talks with Le Roy and that news of him joining the Leopards for the African Cup of Nations qualifiers was only a rumour.

“I don’t know who started the rumour but it’s completely false. I did not have a direct contact with the DR Congo coach,” Kakuta told Le Figaro.

“Personally, I want to play for France. I’ve been playing for France since age 16. I don’t see why I should change my mind overnight.”

“I received phone calls of congratulations on my decision to play for Congo. I didn’t understand. It’s a bit strange to call up players without letting them know beforehand.”

On Monday, Kakuta reported to the France Under-20 camp in Clairefontaine, where the side are preparing for their Euro 2013 qualifier against Kazakhstan.

“My dream is to play for the France senior team,” he concluded.
