Kompany: City, Spurs success good for league

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany believes the development of his club, and of rivals Tottenham, is healthy for the league.

The Eastlands club has progressed from a mid table side in the Premier League to serious title contenders following the takeover of Sheikh Mansour in 2008, which has allowed them to bring in such players as Yaya Toure, David Silva, Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero.

“I think Tottenham and ourselves doing well in the past few years has been great,” he told Sky Sports.

“Had it just been the same four sides challenging each season, it would have damaged the game here. Now there are maybe six teams capable of winning the title and that can only be great for English football.”

City qualified for the Champions League by finishing third in the table last season, level on points with second-placed Chelsea, and Kompany sees no reason why Roberto Mancini’s side cannot launch a title challenge this term.

“We finished equal-second last season so there is only one spot to go for this year – and that’s to win the title,” he added.

“It’s a big challenge – but why not? There is pressure and expectation on us but that’s what we want.”

Kompany believes that things are just getting going for City after last year’s successes.

“I don’t see what we achieved last season as anything other than the beginning. The club has changed on and off the pitch since the new owners arrived,” he said.

“But our fans deserve success as much as other great clubs. There should be no credit taken away from the players – it doesn’t matter what other people think about us.”
