Lampard keeping options open

Frank Lampard says the onus is on Chelsea regarding a potential move to Major League Soccer when his contract expires next year.

Lampard, 34, is in the final season of his existing deal at the west London club, and has been tipped to follow the likes of Thierry Henry and David Beckham in bringing his career to a close in the United States.

The stalwart midfielder looked to be on his way out of Chelsea after finding himself marginalised under Andre Villas-Boas last term, but he returned to the team under Roberto di Matteo as they lifted the FA Cup and Champions League.

“I am not sure (about a future in MLS),” Lampard said.

“I have another year on my contract at Chelsea and we have a big season ahead of us with the Super Cup and the Club World Cup in December.

“It’s up to Chelsea to speak with me about my future and at that time, I’ll speak with them. I wouldn’t rule anything out at the moment.”

Both New York Red Bulls and Los Angeles Galaxy have been linked with a move for Lampard should he decide on a stint in the MLS.

Sources close to Galaxy’s Robbie Keane have told Goal.com the Ireland striker is privately seeking a move back to Europe at the end of the 2012 season.

If Keane departs, it would open up a Designated Player spot for Galaxy, allowing the team to pursue Lampard.

The Red Bulls are also believed to be holding out for the right Designated Player, with head coach Hans Backe confirming the club is looking for an attacking midfielder.

Lampard though claimed he does not have a preference toward a specific MLS club.
