Coventry City earned a thrilling 5-4 victory over Bristol City in League One on Sunday to lift some of the gloom surrounding their future.

The home side, playing at Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium as their search for a ground goes on, surrendered a three-goal first-half lead but regained their composure to pick up their first points of the campaign.

Beaten 3-2 by Crawley Town on the opening day, Steven Pressley’s side dominated the first half and led comfortably courtesy of goals from Leon Clarke, Callum Wilson and Billy Daniels – his first in professional football.

But the visitors, relegated from the Championship last season, hit back in the second period as Sam Baldock netted twice, sandwiching an effort from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, to level the scores.

Wilson, who scored against Crawley, doubled his tally after the break only for Marvin Elliott to make it 4-4.

And that set the stage for 19-year-old Daniels to grab the winner and cap a remarkable match.

The result provides a huge boost for a side that started the season with a 10-point deduction.

Clarke opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 27 minutes following Aden Flint’s foul on Wilson, with the 21-year-old getting himself on the scoresheet for the second and Daniels’ header extending Coventry’s lead on the stroke of half-time.

The visitors reduced the deficit soon after the restart, albeit in fortuitous circumstances.

Emmanuel-Thomas’ low cross was diverted onto the post by Greg Cunningham, with the ball bouncing back into the net via Baldock.

And when Emmanuel-Thomas’ 30-yard free-kick left Joe Murphy wrong-footed to reduce the deficit further after 62 minutes, the match looked to be slipping away from Coventry.

Baldock slotted in the away side’s third after 74 minutes, but just 56 seconds later Wilson converted his second from inside the box.

Elliott’s superb scissor kick should have been enough to earn Sean O’Driscoll’s side a point, but Daniels had other ideas as he turned home Clarke’s volley across goal with three minutes to play.
