League One’s top two claimed victory on Saturday as Swindon Town and Bristol City cemented their position as the division’s pace-setters.
League One’s leading duo of Swindon Town and Bristol City gave further evidence of their promotion credentials with respective victories over Chesterfield and Scunthorpe United on Saturday.
The two clubs went into the weekend joined at the top on 51 points, with Swindon ahead on goal difference having played a game more, and the picture at the summit remains the same.
Swindon hit the front against Chesterfield through Jack Stephens’ 17th-minute opener, but Paul Cook’s side responded five minutes later courtesy of Sam Clucas.
Parity lasted only three minutes, however, as John Swift restored Swindon’s lead, and the points were sealed when Andy Williams struck two minutes into the second period.
City matched their title rivals at Glanford Park thanks to Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’ penalty and a late effort from Luke Freeman.
The result ended Scunthorpe’s seven-match unbeaten league run while for City it was a fourth win in succession.
Six points behind the leading pair are MK Dons, who were grateful for Carl Baker’s goal midway through the second half of their 1-0 home win over Sheffield United.
At the other end of the table, bottom club Yeovil Town ended a five-match losing run in all competitions with a 1-0 win over Bradford City, while Crawley Town are just one place above them after they were beaten 4-1 at fifth-placed Rochdale.
The other two sides in the bottom four are Colchester United and Crewe Alexandra, who both suffered defeat on Saturday.
Colchester went down 2-0 at home to Walsall, while Crewe were beaten 2-1 at 10-man Notts County, thanks to a late winner from substitute Billy Daniels.
Managerless Gillingham shrugged off the departure of Peter Taylor by overcoming Coventry City 3-1 at Priestfield, and Doncaster Rovers saw off Barnsley 1-0 in a meeting of two south Yorkshire sides.
Elsewhere, Oldham Athletic triumphed 2-0 at Fleetwood Town and Port Vale came from behind to defeat Peterborough United 2-1.
