Leeds´ performance will ´send a shiver down the spines´ of relegation rivals, says Carragher

A 2-1 win over 10-man Manchester United will “send a shiver down the spines” of Leeds United’s Premier League relegation rivals, says Jamie Carragher.

Leeds moved six points clear of the bottom three with Monday’s victory, which was their first league triumph over the Red Devils since September 2002, when they won 1-0.

In addition, it was their first league triumph at Old Trafford since February 1981, which was also a 1-0 victory, ending a run of 18 visits without a win (D7 L11).

Noah Okafor’s brace proved to be the difference, with Casemiro’s 69th-minute header proving to be no more than a consolation after Lisandro Martinez was sent off 13 minutes earlier.

The Opta supercomputer now assigns Leeds just a 2.2% chance of being relegated to the Championship with six games of their season remaining.

Nottingham Forest (10.3%), West Ham (38.6%) and Tottenham (48.7%) are all more likely to be relegated in its season simulations, and Carragher believes Daniel Farke’s side delivered a statement result in their quest to remain in the top flight.

“For the majority of this season, they’ve been a breath of fresh air in the Premier League,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“They’ve been absolutely fantastic. But how they performed in the first half will send a shiver down the spines of everyone in that relegation fight.

“That was a confident performance, coming to the most in-form team at home. They didn’t just hang on in a game like that, they absolutely bossed Man Utd in the first half.

“Those teams down there. They would have been watching – the supporters, players and staff – and that will be a big blow for them psychologically.

“That was the performance of a really good team. When we go back to Tottenham, we haven’t seen a performance like that from them in about six months.”

Leeds’ victory ended a run of six Premier League games without a win (D4 L2), while it is just their second away victory this season after a 3-1 triumph at Wolves back in September.

Their remaining league matches see them face several of the sides around them, starting this weekend when they welcome bottom club Wolves to Elland Road.

Leeds also face Burnley and Tottenham before playing West Ham on the final day of the season, while they also have an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea to look forward to on April 26.
