Leonardo looking to spend

Inter Milan boss Leonardo is hopeful that an injection of talent in the off-season can help his side in the Serie A next season.

A 3-1 victory over Catania on Sunday, courtesy of a Giampaolo Pazzini double, saw Inter finish the season in second place – just six points behind city rivals and champions AC Milan.

The reigning Champions League champions struggled in the early part of the season which led to the departure of former boss Rafael Benitez, but ever since Leonardo was introduced as the club’s new manager, they have improved dramatically.

The manager believes slight tweaking of their improved squad, via the transfer market, will help his side challenge for Scudetto honours next season.

“We’ve got to the point where the transfer market permeates everything,” Leonardo told the club’s website.

“I think this team just needs a few minor adjustments to be competitive on all fronts. The core of the team is there and it’s what gives this group its spirit, so that shouldn’t be touched.”

Leonardo praised his players for their victory on Sunday and was also pleased with the club’s impressive home form since he took over at the San Siro.

“12 home wins in a row means lots of things: points on the board, consistency and that the team has been able to produce. But the satisfaction lies more in what we have done than in the record itself,” he said.

“Staying in control of the game at a slow pace wasn’t easy but the players did really well. There were lots of positives today. Inter are definitely on the up.”

Leonardo has the chance to win a trophy with Inter when they play Palermo in the Coppa Italia final on Sunday.
