Saint-Etienne moved into third place in Ligue 1, despite being held to a drab goalless draw at Toulouse on Friday.

Christophe Galtier’s men were looking for their first win in four against Toulouse, but it was the hosts who created the better opportunities in a dour affair.

It took until injury time of the first half for either side to fashion a clear goalscoring chance, wing-back Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro seeing his left-footed effort deflected wide of the near post.

Toulouse continued to dictate play in the second half and went close again as their other wing-back Serge Aurier headed over the crossbar from close-range.

Aurier spurned another opening just before the hour mark, firing off target again after Saint-Etienne had failed to deal with a free-kick from Etienne Didot.

But that proved to be the final chance of the encounter as both sides were left to settle for a point that leapfrogs Saint-Etienne above Lille on goal difference, although Rene Girard’s side can move back into third with a win over Sochaux on Saturday.
