Ligue 1 wrap: Lyon end losing streak, Marseille held

Second-half goals from Bakary Kone and Bafetimbi Gomis have helped Lyon end their Ligue 1 losing streak with a 3-1 triumph over Toulouse.

Lyon had lost their past three matches in Ligue 1 – the first time they had done that in 20 years – and despite giving up a first-half lead when Wissam Ben Yedder equalised in the 28th minute, the hosts grounded out the win after the break at the Stade de Gerland.

Gomis scored his 86th Ligue 1 goal to replace Lorient’s Ludovic Giuly as the leading goal-scorer currently playing in France’s top flight as Lyon moved closer to second-placed Marseille.

A driving run from Alexandre Lacazette set up Lyon’s opening goal on Sunday as the French winger got to the byline, before passing to the back post where Clement Grenier slid in to score.

Lyon head coach Remi Garde may have been concerned about his side’s fragile mental state when Toulouse equalised just before the half-hour mark with Daniel Braaten setting up Ben Yedder to tap the ball into the net.

But Lyon responded just four minutes into the second half.

Grenier’s corner was headed clear by the Toulouse defence but went straight back to Lyon’s central midfielder, who controlled the ball on his chest, let it bounce and then thumped a half-volley to the back post where Kone got clear to head home.

The hosts wrapped up victory in the 63rd minute when Gomis smashed Gueida Fofana’s cut back into the net.

Garde’s team remain third in Ligue 1, just two points behind Marseille – who were lucky to escape with a 0-0 draw from their trip to Lille.

The home side had 63 percent possession versus Marseille and put seven shots on target but were denied every time by visiting goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, who claimed his fifth-consecutive clean sheet in the French top flight.

In the other Ligue 1 fixture on Sunday, Nice defeated Sochaux 3-0 to move above Lille into fifth position on the table.

After a goalless first half in Nice, Mahamane Traore, Didier Digard and Dario Cvitanich scored for the hosts as they claimed their second victory in a row.
