A late equaliser has cost Marseille the chance to move provisionally into second place in Ligue 1 as they drew 2-2 at Rennes on Saturday.

Andre Ayew put Marseille ahead in the 38th minute after good work from French international Mathieu Valbuena before Rennes defender Kevin Theophile-Catherine levelled just before the hour mark.

Ayew’s younger brother Jordan scored what looked to be the winner for Marseille in the 83rd minute but Romain Alessandrini spoiled the party with two minutes remaining, securing a point and a temporary hold on fourth spot for Rennes in the standings.

The result for Marseille means they are in third position, equal on points with second-placed PSG, who play Lille on Sunday.

Bottom side Nancy got their second win of the season as they stunned Lorient 2-1 to keep alive hopes of survival.

Sebastien Puygrenier scored the winner for Nancy in the 71st minute after Lorient’s Jeremie Aliadiere cancelled out Paul Alo’o Efoulou’s opener.

Champions Montpellier climbed the Ligue 1 table with a comfortable 2-0 against Sochaux.

First-half goals to Emanuel Herrara (28th minute) and John Utaka (34th) secured the result for Montpellier, who moved into seventh position.

In other results, Troyes got their third win of the season with 2-1 victory over Brest while Toulouse dropped points with a 1-1 draw against Reims.

Evian and Ajaccio also played out a 1-1 draw, as both teams fight to avoid the relegation zone.
