Liverpool favour Amorim ahead of De Zerbi as Alonso alternative

Liverpool have had to change the direction of their search for a Jurgen Klopp successor this week, with Xabi Alonso, their primary target, confirming he would stay in charge of the team at Bayer Leverkusen beyond this summer. Their alternative targets reportedly consist of Brighton and Hove Albion’s Roberto De Zerbi and Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim, and while De Zerbi’s Premier League experience is seen as an advantage, according to Liverpool Echo, the preferred target for the Merseysiders at this point is Amorim.

The 39-year-old Portuguese coach currently has his team leading the Liga Portugal standings with a one-point advantage over Benfica, and it seems pretty certain the title race will be decided between these two teams as Porto sit third with a 10-point deficit after 26 games played.

As is the case with Klopp at Liverpool, Xavi Hernandez and Thomas Tuchel are also coming to the end of their spells at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, respectively, and Liverpool are therefore aware that they need to make their move soon to avoid getting beaten to Amorim’s signature.
