Manchester City are currently going through the worst run of results since Pep Guardiola took charge of the team in 2016, winning just one and losing seven of their last 10 matches across all competitions. Injuries have hampered their efforts gravely this season, but it’s obvious the squad needs fresh legs if they are to return to their levels of previous years.
To that end, according to The Times, the reigning Premier League champions have identified Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes and Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz as the players they need to regain composure and creativity in their midfield ranks.
Wirtz would be their primary target, but City will be aware that the 21-year-old is of serious interest to Real Madrid as well, and that they wouldn’t stand much chance in a race against the 15-time European champions.
As for Guimaraes, City wanted him last summer but decided against triggering the £100million release clause in his contract, and it remains to be seen if Newcastle would accept a lower offer for the 27-year-old Brazilian who is reportedly open to the move in January.
Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, Atalanta’s Ederson and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton are also being monitored.
