Manchester United Land Middle East Sponsor; Berbatov, Owen and Valencia Shine in Carling Cup

Manchester United have agreed to a three-year sponsorship deal with Pakistani mobile telecommunications company Zong.

Zong will be named the Red Devils official mobile partner in Pakistan, with reports estimating that United have ten million supporters in Pakistan.

“It is a relatively young company but has ambitions to be one of the major players in the country,” said Manchester United commercial director Richard Arnold.

“Partnering with United will give them high visibility, as well as helping the club to communicate directly with millions of our supporters there,” added Arnold.

Obviously United could use any sponsorship at the moment, but Zong could potentially become the biggest winner of this deal.

“This partnership is one-of-a-kind coming from Pakistan and the initiative that Zong has taken to team up with a giant like Manchester United will only lead to prosperity, growth and triumph,” said Rizwan Akhter, the director of advertising and promotions at Zong.

It seems that Akhter agrees and rightfully so.

Sir Alex ‘Nudged’ by Sensational Second Team

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that he is under constant pressure when selecting his match-day squads.

United’s second stringers — most notably Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia — are giving Fergie even more to ponder following their comfortable 3-0 Carling Cup win at Aldershot Town.

“They are always giving me nudges,” said Ferguson.

“It’s the difficult thing about having so many good players.

“We have a fantastic squad and that is why I had to play these players, they needed games.

“They have not had many first-team games because the consistency of the team is very good and we have not had to make changes.

“But Michael Owen, every time he plays he scores. It’s a fantastic record he has got. You cannot ignore that.

“He is a fantastic professional. Dimitar Berbatov had a fantastic game and scored a tremendous goal.

“They’ve all done well. Antonio Valencia, Tom Cleverley coming back (from injury) is a good thing for us because he is an outstanding footballer and needed another game.”

Usually the Carling Cup is not a priority for Manchester United, but after the beating the Red Devils suffered at Old Trafford at the weekend Tuesday’s match against Aldershot Town was a must win.

And win they did. Sir Alex stressed the importance of bouncing back and the squad did not let him down.

“We had a difficult day on Sunday, we tried to play with the history book,” said Fergie.

“If we kept our discipline and just played out the game with 10 men it wouldn’t have bothered another side.

“It’s the nature of Manchester United to try to win the game whether it’s 10 men, nine men, seven men or 11 men. that’s the nature and it’s very difficult to change that.

“They kept their discipline and professionalism (against Aldershot), and enjoyed it.”
