Manchester United win Champions League in penalty shootout (SN)

Manchester United won the Champions League here on Wednesday beating Premiership rivals Chelsea 6-5 in a penalty shootout after the match finished 1-1 after extra-time.

United claimed their second Champions League title under Sir Alex Ferguson when Edwin van der Sar saved from Chelsea's Nicolas Anelka – Anelka's club captain John Terry had missed with what was potentially the decisive penalty earlier.

United's Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo – who was to miss a penalty in the penalty shootout – opened the scoring in the 26th minute but Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard equalised on the stroke of half-time. The match ended 1-1 at the end of normal time.

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, likely to have been making his last appearance for the side, was redcarded towards the end of the second-half of extra-time after he tapped Nemanja Vidic on the face during a fracas between the two sides.
