Martinez rues missed chances against City

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez was disappointed his side failed to pick up any points against Manchester City on Wednesday.

Martinez’s team took it to Manchester City for the first hour at the DW Stadium only to go down to the reigning champions 2-0 courtesy of strikes from Mario Balotelli and James Milner.

The Spaniard said his side dominated much of the game and was left disappointed with the final result.

“From our point of view, I think we edged the game for 60 minutes,” Martinez said.

“The disappointment is we couldn’t get the first goal in that period.”

Arouna Kone was guilty of missing two good chances in the opening half for Wigan and Martinez said the result of the game could have easily changed had the striker found the back of the net.

“When you are just slightly ahead of the opposition you have to score and that (Kone) was a clear chance,” he said.

“We could have been more patient but the frustration is we couldn’t find a goal. That was the only thing missing.

“But I loved the attitude, effort and personality that we showed. We kept showing that desire. It was a very pleasing performance from many aspects but we are still disappointed.”

Wigan travel north to face Newcastle at St James’ Park on Monday night in their next league clash.
