Merida wants a title-winning start with Atleti

(GSM) – Atletico Madrid midfielder Fran Merida is keen on starting his career at Vicente Calderon by winning a title.

Merida, who arrived at the Madrid club from Arsenal in May, could make his competitive debut in the European Supercup against Internazionale at the end of August.

“It will be a special day,” he said at a press conference on Thursday.

“We have the opportunity to play such a high-level game so soon and against such a big team, It’s a unique opportunity.

“The goal for every footballer is to win titles and to be the best, so we have to be ambitious this season.”

Meanwhile, Merida says he hopes he can go on to represent Spain in future.

“Every player dreams of being in the national team,” he said.

“But at the moment I am concentrating on Atletico.”

In the meantime, the midfielder will be cheering on La Roja when they face Holland in the World Cup final on Sunday.

Merida added: “I watched the semi-final just like any other fan. Let’s hope we can win the final. I really hope and wish that Spain will win.”
