Despite being sacked by Fiorentina, Sinisa Mihajlovic would be the next Serbian national team coach if Inter’s Dejan Stankovic had his way.

After being replaced by Delio Rossi on the Viola bench, Mihajlovic is unable to be appointed coach at another Sere A side, as league rules state he can only work at one club per season.

Serbia, meanwhile, are on the hunt for a new coach after Vladimir Petrovic was sacked following failure to qualify for the Euro 2012, with Radovan Curcic currently in temporary charge of the team.

However, Stankovic believes Mihajlovic is the ideal man to take the reins in the long term.

“If you ask me whether Mihajlovic is ready to manage Serbia, then I would reply Sinisa is 150 percent ready both for a long career in the world of football and this enormous experience,” Stankovic told Serbian newspaper Blic.

“What counts more than anything else is not his age, but his great experience and knowledge of the sport.”

Meanwhile the president of the Serbian FA, Tomislav Karadzic, added: “Mihajlovic is among the best Serbian tacticians in circulation and he is also young.”

“I’d like to talk to him to find out what his plans are. After the World Cup, I called Mihajlovic two or three times, but he chose Fiorentina.”

“I don’t know if he can be considered the number one candidate now, but in any case we will only seek a new coach next year.”

Stankovic is in line to play one more friendly for his country before entering international retirement, making him the most capped player for Serbia as he currently tied with Savo Milosevic on 102 caps.
