MLS Wrap: Red Bulls too good for Houston

The New York Red Bulls have moved within one point of top spot in the MLS Eastern Conference after a 2-0 win over Houston Dynamo.

The Red Bulls snapped a three-game losing streak with their victory over Houston with Fabian Espindola and Jonathan Steele scoring the goals for the home side as they extended Dynamo’s winless run to five matches.

The win on Sunday took New York to second spot in the standings in the Eastern Conference with 28 points, just one behind leaders Montreal Impact, who lost over the weekend.

New York’s star striker Thierry Henry had a frustrating time of it against Houston, missing golden scoring opportunities either side of half-time.

Henry shot wide after being teed up by Tim Cahill in the 15th minute and failed to hit the target again five minutes into the second half under pressure from Dynamo defender Corey Ashe, who left stud marks on the French striker’s ankle.

The Red Bulls finally opened the scoring on the hour-mark when Espindola produced a calm finish after bursting onto Eric Alexander’s through ball before Henry again wasted a goalscoring chance in the 79th minute, knocking the rebound from Peguy Luyindula’s strike straight back to Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall.

But with two minutes remaining, Henry finally produced in the forward third, slipping the ball through to Steele, who beat Hall with a thumping strike.

New York moved above Philadelphia Union (26 points) into second position in the Eastern Conference, while Sporting Kansas City also moved into contention, rising to fourth with a stunning 3-2 triumph over Columbus Crew.

Only three points separate fourth-placed Sporting and Montreal at the top of the Eastern Conference after the Impact gave up the lead twice in their 4-3 loss to the Colorado Rapids on Saturday.

The Rapids trailed 2-1 and 3-2 in Montreal but eventually claimed the three points thanks to Tony Cascio’s strike in the fifth and final minute of second-half stoppage time.

In a high-scoring weekend of MLS action, the San Jose Earthquakes scored twice in second-half stoppage time to recover from a two-goal deficit and defeat Los Angeles Galaxy 3-2, while the Philadelphia Union were held to a 2-2 draw by FC Dallas.

In other results, Real Salt Lake won 1-0 away to Toronto, Chivas USA drew 1-1 with the New England Revolution and the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated DC United 1-0.
