Netherlands caretaker coach Dwight Lodeweges admitted his side encountered “huge problems” in their Nations League loss to Italy.

Nicolo Barella’s first-half goal was enough for Italy to record a 1-0 victory in Amsterdam on Monday, sending them top of Group 1 in League A.

Lodeweges, in charge on an interim basis following Ronald Koeman’s departure to Barcelona, praised Italy’s performance.

“The biggest problem before half-time was that we were too far apart,” he said.

“Their dynamics forced us to make decisions all the time. If you’re not far apart, that’s a bit easier.

“But Italy has a great squad, an amazing squad, with lots of quality. We really had big problems with them.”

The Netherlands are due to face Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy in October, making trips to Zenica and Milan.

Lodeweges is unsure if he will still be in charge next month, with Henk ten Cate and Massimiliano Allegri linked with the position.

“That depends on the board. I have no idea. I was supposed to take over right now,” he said.

“If there’s no new manager, they might ask me to help them out again. I’ll wait and see.”
