Nottingham Forest 1-0 Porto (2-1 agg): Gibbs-White tees up semi-final showdown with Aston Villa

Morgan Gibbs-White’s deflected effort was enough to see Nottingham Forest into the Europa League semi-finals as they earned a nervy 1-0 win over Porto at the City Ground.

After a bizarre own goal from Martim Fernandes allowed Forest to leave Portugal with a 1-1 draw in last week’s quarter-final first leg, an early red card for Jan Bednarek gave them a massive opportunity on home soil.

And it was one they took as Gibbs-White struck in the 12th minute, even if they endured a few nervy moments as Porto hit the woodwork twice in the second half.

Terem Moffi’s dinked effort was smothered by Stefan Ortega early on, but Porto were on the back foot after just eight minutes, with a VAR review resulting in a straight red card for Bednarek following his rash, high challenge on Chris Wood near halfway.

The effects of that collision eventually forced Wood off, but not before Forest took the lead. Gibbs-White was fed by Neco Williams, and with the Porto backline backing off, the Forest captain was able to reach the edge of the area before his shot deflected in off Pablo Rosario.

Forest then laid siege to Porto’s area without extending their advantage, with Murillo, Nicolas Dominguez and Igor Jesus going close either side of the interval.

Three half-time substitutions from Francesco Farioli gave Porto a renewed impetus, though, and they came agonisingly close to sending the tie to extra time on two occasions.

Either side of Murillo and Callum Hudson-Odoi going off injured, William Gomes and Alan Varela were both unfortunate to rattle the crossbar, with Vitor Pereira’s hosts surviving to meet Aston Villa in an all-English semi-final.

Data Debrief: Forest end 42-year wait after early red card

Forest are into their first major European semi-final since 1984, when they lost 3-2 on aggregate to Anderlecht in the last four of the UEFA Cup.

It looked like the two-time European champions would have it all their own way after Bednarek’s red card, which was the earliest in any Europa League knockout-stage match since Raul Meireles for Fenerbahce versus BATE Borisov in February 2013 (fourth minute).

But that was not the case as their woodwork was struck twice after half-time. They have had six such reprieves in the Europa League this season, the joint-most alongside Celtic and Malmo.
