Nigeria forward Peter Odemwingie will miss his nation’s upcoming friendly matches against Botswana and Zambia.

The West Bromwich Albion forward has asked for time out in order for him to attend to his knee problems, which caused him to miss their 3-0 to Arsenal in the English Premier League on Saturday.

New Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi had included Odemwingie as part of a 28-man squad to play the two matches this week, but the 30-year-old confirmed he would miss the clashes.

“My knee is still not good and I will not be coming for the games,” Odemwingie said, according to Complete Sports.

“I can, however, assure Nigerians that I will be back in the team as soon as I am fully fit to play.”

The Super Eagles are expected to return to camp in Abuja on Tuesday.

It will be their first game under manager Keshi, and it will also be their first appearance after failing to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
