Ricky van Wolfswinkel scored his first goal for Norwich City on his home debut in a 1-1 against Real Sociedad on Tuesday.

The Dutchman was fortunate to see Leroy Fer’s effort hit him before sneaking past Claudio Bravo in the Sociedad goal, before former Arsenal striker Carlos Vela levelled the scores after the hour mark.

Norwich boss Chris Hughton recalled Bradley Johnson to his starting 11 after the midfielder missed the previous five games with a knee injury, and he gave home debuts to Martin Olsson, Nathan Redmond, Fer and Van Wolfswinkel.

The hosts broke the deadlock in 12th minute when Snodgrass’ corner was met by Fer and Van Wolfswinkel wrong-footed Bravo with the deflection.

The striker had the chance to double his tally but Bravo was alert to the danger and palmed the ball to safety.

New arrivals Olsson and Redmond were causing problems down the flanks as the visitors struggled to settle into the contest.

With the interval approaching, Norwich attacked and Russell Martin had a great chance with a header but he steered his effort just wide.

The break seemed to do Sociedad the world of good and Ruben Pardo’s deflected effort hit the post before Vela went close, forcing a well-timed block from Martin.

However, the Mexican did not have to wait long for his goal and he showed the strength required to hold off a challenge and slot past Mark Bunn in the 65th minute.

Both sides made substitutions to rest key players and in the dying seconds substitute Xabi Prieto had one last chance to silence the home crowd but Martin was once again on hand to clear the danger.
