Two sides who have really struggled at the end of the season, Fiorentina will welcome Genoa to the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday night.

Fiorentina

Starting with the hosts, while Fiorentina may have managed to land a top-half finish last season, their Serie A campaign this year has been nothing short of disastrous. Coming off the back of yet another worrying display in their 1-0 loss away at Parma last weekend, Vincenzo Montella’s side have lost their last six matches on the bounce. Even more worrying for the former AC Milan boss, he has now seen his side fail to win any of their final 15 matches across all competitions, a run that stems all the way back to the 17th of February. While their goal difference may have helped the Purples secure another season in Italy’s top-tier, Sunday’s hosts hold just a three-point buffer over the drop zone and their form at the Stadio Artemio Franchi will be a growing concern for fans around Firenze. Suffering back-to-back home defeats against Sassuolo and AC Milan, Fiorentina have remarkably failed to win any of their 10 Serie A home matches in 2019.

Team News

Fiorentina have confirmed that Croatian forward Marko Pjaca will miss Sunday’s final matchup of the season after suffering another knee injury back in March.

Vincenzo Montella also looks unlikely to be able to call upon Everton loanee Kevin Mirallas.

Genoa

As for the visitors, still firmly at the heart of a relegation battle entering the final round of Serie A fixtures, Genoa find themselves in an almost identical situation to their hosts on Sunday. Only managing to pick up a 1-1 draw when they welcomed Cagliari to Genova last weekend, Cesare Prandelli’s side find themselves one-point adrift of Empoli and top-flight safety. While I Rossoblu might still be dreaming of reclaiming their Serie A status, Genoa have drastically struggled with their form at the end of the season. The Red and Blues have failed to win any of their last nine domestic appearances, a run that stems back to the middle of March. Suffering a 2-1 loss against Atalanta in their final match away from the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris, Prandelli will also be considerably worried by Genoa’s form on the road. This weekend’s visitors have not recorded an away victory in any of their previous eight matches on their travels and have picked up just one away victory since the 30th of September.

Team News

21-year-old defender Giuseppe Pezzella will be serving a suspension on Sunday, meaning the left-back will join the injured duo of Oscar Hiljemark and Stefano Sturaro on the sideline.

Key Factors to Consider

  • Fiorentina are enduring a six-match losing run and have failed to win any of their last 15 matches across all competitions.
  • The Purples have also failed to find the net in their last four consecutive appearances.
  • Genoa have failed to win any of their previous nine Serie A matchups.
  • They have also managed to pick up just one away victory since the 30th of September.
  • The last time the two sides met they played out a 0-0 draw back in December.

Conclusion

On paper, Sunday’s clash has all the makings of a match that could produce few chances at either end of the pitch. With Fiorentina and Genoa so publically struggling at the back end of the season, coupled with Vincenzo Montella’s side now failing to find the net in any of their past four appearances at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, we’re backing another low-scoring encounter this weekend.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals

Best Odds: 8/13
