Inter Milan were forced to work hard for three points at Sampdoria last weekend but won’t get it any easier when they play host to Fiorentina on Tuesday. The midweek round of the Serie A brings a potential cracker to Stadio Giuseppe Meazza as Viola will be fired up to build upon their comprehensive 3-0 victory over SPAL.
Marcelo Brozovic’s late winner gave Inter Milan fans a sigh of relief on Saturday as Nerazzurri grabbed important three points in a tension-filled match against Sampdoria. Emotions flared up as Radja Nainggolan and Kwadwo Asamoah both had their goals ruled out, whereas a goal by Sampdoria’s Gregoire Defrel was also cancelled by VAR.
Running high on spirits off of their Tottenham heroics in the Champions League, Inter Milan did well to grab an important victory that should be a positive spark for Luciano Spalletti’s charges. The Nerazzurri were widely applauded following a great job in the summer transfer window and the ninth place in the Serie A standings is definitely where they didn’t think they would be after five rounds of action. A win over third-placed Fiorentina would be a massive morale boost, whereas it would also allow Inter Milan to make a giant leap in the standings if other results go their way. Luciano Spalletti’s men showed great character in the last two games and will be all fired up to get another big scalp.
Luciano Spalletti will have major selection concerns with the exemption of Sime Vrsaljko who is still struggling with a knee injury.
Sitting as high as third in the standings, Fiorentina should not get too comfortable as things can change in a second. Stefano Pioli’s men have done great at the start of the season – especially at home – and the forthcoming trip to the city of Milano will prove to be a genuine test to his team’s credibility and character.
Three triumphs at the Stadio Artemio Franchi – with a combined goal difference of 10-1 – is a remarkable record but Fiorentina have only managed one point in their two away matches and the upcoming fixture will be a proper test to their ability. Viola ruined SPAL’s promising start to the campaign with a 3-0 victory last time out and did well to recover from a 1-0 defeat by Napoli but the Inter Milan game will be a challenge of its own. Fiorentina were soundly beaten in their last two visits and will be looking to get one back at Nerazzurri away for the first time since 2015.
Stefano Pioli should have a full crop to pick from.
Cristiano Biraghi sustained a knock against SPAL but should be fit to feature against Inter Milan.
Key Factors to Consider
- Mauro Icardi scored 9 goals against Fiorentina since 2014
- Fiorentina have yet to register an away win this season
- Inter Milan are looking to get three wins in a row for the 1st time since December 2017
- Inter Milan last lost a home game to Fiorentina in 2015
- Five of the last six meetings between the two sides resulted in over 2.5 goals
Inter Milan are bursting with confidence following back-to-back wins over Tottenham and Sampdoria, respectively, and will be eager to make it three out of three. Luciano Spalletti’s men are playing with great character and will be looking for another morale-boosting win when Fiorentina come to town. Viola have struggled away this season and could be set for another disappointment.
