Liverpool’s title celebrations and Leicester’s relegation despair could both unfold dramatically at the King Power Stadium on Sunday, as the two clubs face off in a crucial Premier League clash.
The Reds could officially clinch the crown if Ipswich Town deliver them a major boost elsewhere, while for the Foxes, only a shock victory will be enough to keep their slim survival hopes alive. Anything less, and their return to the Championship will be sealed in front of their home fans.
Leicester City
As Liverpool edge ever closer to claiming the coveted title, Leicester are sliding relentlessly toward relegation to the second tier for the 2025/26 season. Even a shock win over the dominant league leaders, while potentially prolonging a slim hope, would likely prove insufficient to save them with just five matches remaining.
Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side finally found their scoring touch again last weekend, halting an eight-game Premier League goal drought by twice coming from behind in a 2-2 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion. However, that revival seems too little, too late in their efforts to avoid relegation.
Seventeen points from safety with only 18 still available, Leicester will be relegated if they draw or lose to Liverpool. Even an unlikely win won’t be enough should Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United both claim victory.
Still, after breaking their dismal scoreless run on any ground, Leicester may channel their renewed attacking belief to avoid becoming the first English top-flight team to go nine straight home games without a goal.
The Foxes’ last league goal at the King Power also came in a 2-2 draw with Brighton back in December, before scoring a consolation in a 3-1 Boxing Day loss to Liverpool. But another consolation won’t offer much solace this time.
Team News
Set to benefit from a few squad returns this weekend, Leicester boss Van Nistelrooy has confirmed that Wout Faes and Jeremy Monga — the Premier League’s second-youngest player ever — are available again after minor issues ruled them out last week.
Victor Kristiansen (personal reasons) and Facundo Buonanotte — ineligible to face his parent club last time — are also back in contention, though Harry Winks (disciplinary) and Abdul Fatawu (knee) remain sidelined.
Faes’s return could allow for a switch to a back five, but Van Nistelrooy may stick with the lineup that showed resilience at the Amex, with veteran captain Jamie Vardy, now 38, still leading the line.
Liverpool
Mikel Arteta’s team selection against Brentford made it clear that Liverpool’s main challengers, Arsenal, are now prioritising Champions League success over a fading Premier League title bid, and the Reds took full advantage of their slip-up in gameweek 32.
After the Gunners dropped two points in their London clash with the Bees, Arne Slot’s side had to dig deep at Anfield against West Ham United. However, Luis Diaz’s close-range finish and a trademark header from captain Virgil van Dijk sealed a crucial win.
April 2025 could go down as a historic month for Liverpool; Van Dijk has now joined Mohamed Salah in pledging the next two years to the club, and only two more wins from their final six games are needed to secure a second Premier League crown.
In fact, the title could be theirs as early as this weekend if they beat Leicester at the King Power and Arsenal suffer an upset away to Ipswich. Although they were beaten 3-2 by Fulham in their last away outing, Liverpool have not lost consecutive Premier League away matches since April 2023.
Moreover, the Reds’ two goals at Craven Cottage extended their streak of scoring multiple goals in each of their last six Premier League away games – and in 11 of their previous 12 – so Leicester supporters may already be bracing for the worst.
Team News
Though Trent Alexander-Arnold appears unlikely to join Salah and Van Dijk in signing a new contract, Liverpool have been handed a boost with the right-back possibly making the bench this weekend after a month out with an ankle issue.
Darwin Nunez is also expected to return following the illness that ruled him out against West Ham, leaving the visitors with only two absentees: Joe Gomez (hamstring) and Tyler Morton (shoulder), who are both still recovering.
Salah, now holding the record for most Premier League goal involvements in a 38-game season, is just three contributions shy of setting a new all-time record. He could also become the first player to score in six separate matches against promoted teams in a single Premier League campaign.
Conclusion
Liverpool have recently been giving up a number of opportunities to their opponents, so Leicester ending their dreadful home goal drought cannot be ruled out.
Nevertheless, the Reds are likely to respond with three or four times the firepower, sealing the home side’s relegation to the second tier – even if their title celebrations may be delayed a little longer.
