Brazil will be aiming to build on their convincing victory over Bolivia as they face Peru in a World Cup qualifying match in Lima on Tuesday.

While the visitors are coming off a dominant win, the hosts will be seeking to secure a surprise result after drawing with Paraguay in their opening game of the campaign.

Peru

Peru’s goalless draw against Paraguay in their opening World Cup qualifying match was hard-fought, especially after Luis Advincula’s red card reduced them to 10 men just before halftime. Nevertheless, they managed to secure a valuable point in that game.

Peru have won only one of their last five internationals, but they have been defensively solid recently, keeping three clean sheets in their last four matches. They will be aiming to claim a historic win over Brazil in this competitive encounter, as their last competitive victory against Brazil dates back to June 2016.

Juan Reynoso’s team will now have some hope of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup which will include 48 teams, with CONMEBOL awarded an extra place at the tournament through automatic qualification.

Team News

Peru will be without Luis Advincula due to a one-match suspension following his red card in the previous game. Aldo Corzo is expected to replace him at right-back for this match. Marcos Lopez, who came on at half-time in the last game, is in contention to start this time.

Paolo Guerrero, the experienced forward, will captain the team. At 39 years old, Guerrero has scored 39 goals in 110 international appearances and will be eager to add to his tally in what is perceived as a huge game for his country.

Brazil

In their previous match against Bolivia, Brazil secured a dominant 5-1 victory. Rodrygo scored twice, while Raphinha and Neymar also found the net. Neymar’s goals in that match made him Brazil’s men’s leading scorer, surpassing Pele’s record as he now tops the list with 79 strikes for his country.

This win marked Brazil’s fourth consecutive victory in World Cup qualifying matches. They have also extended their unbeaten streak in World Cup qualifiers to 35 games, a record that goes back to October 2015.

Given their recent success and their past victories in Peru in 2016 and 2021, Brazil will be optimistic about their chances in the upcoming match against Peru, seeking to stamp their authority in the CONMEBOL region after seeing fierce rivals Argentina lift the World Cup trophy in Qatar last year.

Team News

There were concerns over the fitness of Gabriel Magalhaes who was subbed off against Bolivia through what appeared to have been an injury, but more recent reports claim the Arsenal defender is ready to play again and should be in contention to start.

But in case Gabriel doesn’t make the starting XI, interim coach Fernando Diniz could name Al-Ahli’s Roger Ibanez to replace him.

Neymar will once more lead his team as the main playmaker, seeking to extend his goalscoring record, flanked by Raphinha and Rodrygo on the wings, and with Richarlison further up as the striker.

Diniz went with Manchester City’s Ederson Moraes between the posts against Bolivia and there should be no real reason to change that, though if he certainly can if he wants to, with Liverpool’s Alisson Becker an equally strong option.

Conclusion

Brazil have been an extremely unpleasant opponent for Peru over the last couple of years, and the noise of the home supporters will not be enough to stifle such quality.

Verdict: Total away goals over 2.5

Best odds: 73/100
