PSV have completed the signing of striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink on a free transfer until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old has been acquired to provide experienced backup to the likes of Ola Toivonen and Tim Matavz in the Eredivisie giants’ attack, while also helping nurture young talents such as Ruben Bentancourt and Jurgen Locadia.

“Jan and the club both wanted this very much,” said sporting director Marcel Brands. “He had a lot to thank the club for and wants to give something back.”

“PSV know what he can do and obviously in his new role he will achieve something. He will form backup for the striker position and his experience will also be felt by youngsters like Ruben Bentancourt and Jurgen Locadia.”

Hesselink enjoyed a trophy-laden first spell at PSV between 2001 and 2006, lifting three Eredivisie titles and earning international recognition with the Netherlands.

He joined the Eindhoven club from league rivals FC Twente, going on to spells of note with Hull City in the English Premier League, Scottish Premier League outfit Celtic and Rapid Vienna in Austria.
