Villarreal and Panathinaikos each scored twice to hold each other to a 1-1 draw in the Champions League round of sixteen on Wednesday.

After a goalless first half, the second half showed more action and the visiting side even took the lead on 59 minutes. Giorgos Karagounis received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and powered a shot past keeper Diego Lopez.

But the Spanish hosts equalised eight minutes later, as Frenchman Robert Pires was brought down by Wawrzyniak in the penalty area. Giuseppe Rossi took the spot kick and left goalkeeper Mario Galinovic stranded.

Panathaikos now have an away-goal advantage ahead of the return leg, which is scheduled to take place in Athens on March 10th.
