Montenegro-born striker Dzenan Radoncic could become the first naturalised player to represent South Korea.
The 28-year-old, who plays for Suwon Bluewings and first moved to Korea in 2004, will apply for his citizenship through a special naturalisation whereby his talent needs to benefit the nation.
The 192cm striker has played for various clubs in the K-League, including Incheon United, Seongnam Ilhwa and Suwon Bluewings, scoring 52 goals and providing 19 assists in 195 games.
It is unclear whether Radoncic, who had a quiet 2011 season, would be selected for the Korean national team but he is hopeful.
“I am confident. I know I will give it everything I’ve got. If the new coach for Korea selects me, I will put my best effort forward to survive on the national team,” Radoncic told Ilgan Sports.
“I am in good physical shape. Even if I don’t score, I will create chances for my team-mates and throw the opponents’ defence into confusion.”
Radoncic said he believed he could adjust to international level.
“There are many current members on the team who I have played with before,” he said.
“They will help me and I will help them if there is anything I can do for them. They all congratulated me when I announced my plan. There was a lot of support for me.”
