Ronaldinho fails to win Brazil recall

SoccerNews in World Cup 9 Feb 2010

Ronaldinho’s hopes of a Brazil recall received a sizeable blow on Tuesday when he was left out of Dunga’s squad for the team’s final friendly prior to the World Cup against Ireland on March 2.

The friendly match in London is the squad’s last outing before they travel to South Africa for the tournament and Ronaldinho’s omission suggests Dunga has been unmoved by the winger’s recent return to form with AC Milan.

Robinho, who joined former club Santos on a six-month loan deal from Manchester City last month, has been included in the squad.

Five-time champions Brazil were drawn alongside Portugal, Ivory Coast and North Korea in World Cup Group G.

They begin their campaign against North Korea in Johannesburg on June 15.

Squad

Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar (Inter Milan, ITA), Doni (Roma, ITA)

Defenders: Maicon (Inter Milan), Daniel Alves (Barcelona, ESP), Juan (Roma), Lucio (Inter Milan), Luisao (Benfica, POR), Thiago Silva (AC Milan, ITA), Gilberto (Cruzeiro), Michel Bastos (Lyon, FRA)

Midfielders: Gilberto Silva (Panathinaikos, GRE), Josue (Wolfsburg, GER), Felipe Melo (Juventus, ITA), Lucas (Liverpool, ENG), Kaka (Real Madrid, ESP), Ramires (Benfica), Elano (Galatasaray, TUR), Julio Baptista (Roma), Kleberson (Flamengo)

Forwards: Robinho (Santos), Adriano (Flamengo), Nilmar (Villarreal, ESP), Luis Fabiano (Sevilla, ESP)

Of course the Brazilians know how to play the game; it’s practically in their blood to play football.
but I dont know if they’ll win the WC, Spain/Brazil. They’re both strong but, like Luis said, Spain are shaky in dealing with a counter attack (if I remember correctly, that’s how both of the State’s goals were scored when we upset them last summer; I know Altidore’s gol did).
for Brazil, Blaze said this, they just dont have the “it” factor, not as much as they used to anyway. Even with the kind of players they can use, it just doesnt seem like they’ll win their 6th WC in history.

Spain wont will the world cup thats forsure cause they cant even handle a simple counterattack. Brazil could win the world cup they got robinho kaka fabiano pato anderson elano they got world class players and know how to play the game. Jogo Bonito style ! (:

okay there are sum teams th@ peeps support coz of patriotism like brad supportin the USA,face it man they aint takin jack but as a fan you jus support n th@s wh@ i call being a fan-support no matter wh@ the odds are.the State’s team looks really menacing on the pitch and @ the confed cup showed they were no push overs, they most probably have gained confidence-this can work to their advantage or be their downfall.the odds are the states might coz an upset for some teams but it just doesnt have th@ ‘it’ factor to take home the coverted world cup trophy.brazil is also lacking on th@ ‘it’ factor.

by the way, Ali, bocanegra has 12 goals for the U.S. he scored against the Oranje back on Wednesday.
    He’s a good one too.

    dang it. . .
Donovan, then. I just cant stop thinking I would choose him.

maybe Graham Fisher could make an article about who to decide:

    “Donovan or Ronaldinho? You decide”
just like the one he made about lampard and gerrard.

Your most recent comment above my previous one just showed up; that’s why I’m just making an answer to it now.

I dont know who I’d rather. . . cant I just say I would take both? or is this one of those times where I have to make a choice between one or the other?

  • Brad

    Hey Ali:
Jozy hasnt had much time to play for Hull, so he only has a goal in the Carling Cup and the PL, that’s it.
Meanwhile, Dempsey, you can say he has more quality than Altidore, but not that much more. He could be called a “dive bomber” as he scores often with diving headers. He did it quite a few times with both the U.S. and the clubs he has played for.
goalkeepers. . . sorry, where I come from in the states, we have cavalier-like offense, and keepers arent really big guns. and defenders have a tough time with all the skilled strikers. But Spector is an excellent full back, it’s a surprise the only goal he has scored has been disputed as an own goal by Leeds United player (ex, really) Eddie Lewis, another american.
the gk’s for the U.S. are just brilliant. tim howard is currently with his teammate donovan at Everton, and before then he was with Manchester United, and we all know you have to be good if you can play for them, and he did play regularly.
as for guzan, I havent seen him so much. I’ve only ever seen him play in our disaster against Denmark back in November. And he’s only played a few times for Aston Villa; Brad Friedal (maybe I should be a GK, instead of a center midfielder, as all the pro footballers I know who have the first name brad are GKs) is a much better choice.

    gooner:
yeah, no one in their right mind would choose an American player over someone from the Oranje (isnt that their nickname?) squad, exluding GK. that’s where howard comes in.

  • gooner-11

    0 0

    and maybe Donovan sometimes…

who would you rather have, Ronaldinho or Donovan?
actually, i think i would take Donavon.

  • gooner-11

Altidore has scored many outstanding goals with Hull? 2 goals.
    including CONFED CUP? 3 goals.

Yea, definitely not saying the States are bad, but I think any team would rather have anyone on the Holland squad less the keeper.

  • Ali Ezzedine

    0 0

I mean Guzan and Howard are really top class. Also Spector is a very good defender (despite Westham’s recent bad results) isn’t he ? I hope he’s in te SA formation. There’s also Bocanegra,he has the most experience internationally for the US team (80 caps and 10 goals or something) Afterall, the US is a lot better than other teams. I reckon they will get far in the Worldcup, maybe the last 16 or even the semis. All depends on the form of the players.

  • Ali Ezzedine

    0 0

I know all the players you mentioned very well. Donovan is a top class player, showing why a big team like Everton would like to extend the loan contrac. He has really been magnificent.

Jozy is also a very good and young player. He has scored many outstanding goals with Hull and is getting a lot of experience in the world’s best league that would help a lot internationally. His only problem is his nerves as I have noticed recently, but then he is a young player and can develop.

Dempsey is currently a good player. He has done a very good job at Fulham, but he doesnt stand out like the other 2.

You are forgetting about some top class GK you have aren’t you ?

Hi all….this is the news about ronaldinho hasn’t been called up to the brazil national team….
Why are arguing here about USA,Holland,Spain, etc here?
Everybody has his own favorite,so please be respect to each other…especially to someone who had written some dirty words on this forum
    Respect…..Fair play please……for this beautiful game…..

We are underdogs, but its mainly cuz most male athletes go into american grid iron football, baseball, basketball, etc. not real football. They are currentlyy number 16 in FIFA’s ranks, which is good. if we skipped the group stages, we would at least finish in the last 16 of the WC. Not bad for a country that calls the beautiful game soccer.
Donovan is our best player, and google him and look at his resume of goals for the U.S.; it’s good as he’s scored against Mexico (our rivals), Brazil, Italy, and several other European and South American countries.
Then you have Clint Dempsey. He’s tough as nails. google him too, and you’ll find he once played a whole match with both ankles completely broken. He also has scored against big countries, including the winner against Spaiin last summer, and then the opening goal against Brazil a few days later.
Afterwards: Jozy Altidore. He aint being used as much as he should be by Hull City, but he’s a great player, nonetheless. He’s scored almost ten goals for the U.S. and he’s only 20, which is a good record. One of the goals was against Spain.

US is definitely not an underdog in their continent… hence their qualification for the CONFED CUP, which only 8 teams can possibly go to.

i would LOVE to see spain v holland final, just for the pure goodness of the playing!

  • Ali Ezzedine

    0 0

Well, the US team is not neccesarily the underdog in many cases. Arent they no 11 or 9 in the current ranking ?! thats pretty good for a country who have baseball and basketball as their top national sports.

But – Spain I think are really top notch ! I stand by my opinion to have high expecations in the upcoming World Cup (at least they should get to the Finals) but too much arrogance will hurt though (i.e. Brazil in 2006 🙂 )

  • gooner-11

    0 0

actually, i think it could be said that a side like Holland’s side, with lots of top quality players, has a disadvantage to US in that these top players usually come with egos and US does well with their underdog prove-u-wrong team spirit, catching top and possibly arrogant players off guard (ahem, spain?).

  • gooner-11

nice little recap buddy, dont worry, i was barely alive in the 80s too.
…yet no mention of total football, Euro championship in 88 and then slaughtering italy and france in 08 only to have personal issues (poor boulahrouz) and russia (under dutch hiddink) down them in the semis… not to mention the tons of stars over the years..
but its true though, dutch soccer history is riddled with disappointment… yet brilliance somehow.
i truly think this could be their year if RVP comes back to form quick enough.

    here’s a friendly argue:
US, what stars? maybe donavon, US’s top scorer ever with 42 goals in 121 matches, and look at the teams they play… he is not top 50 in the world if you ask me.

  • Brad

    0 0

I really dont care if its a friendly or the world cup final against brazil or spain, I want to see the U.S. win. And I get pretty mad when they dont. It’s in my blood for victory. the same thing goes for MUFC in their competitions, and my youth team.
history about holland: its starts negative, but then gets good.
in the 60s, I think 67 or 68, they lost to luxembourg in the qualifiers for euro. . . yeah, 68.
not even 10 years later, Johan Cruyff comes along, bringing Dutchie football out of the shadows in the 74 WC, finishing as runner ups (the same thing happened in 78, except without cruyff. the 80s, i cant remember anything, but then in the 90 WC, one of their guys is red carded for spitting on and fighting rudi voller of Germany. 8 years later, they were only just knocked out of the world cup in the semis while playing brazil. they arguably had their best team since the cruyff era.

USA USA USA USA USA USA USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • gooner-11

take it easy, it was just a friendly…
it looked like (besides that brutal dejong tackle) dutch players were not very interested, especially in 50/50 balls. then when Holland takes out the d-mids vBommel and deJong US were allowed to get some chances.
but Hollands goals werent much anyways- penalty and deflection.

dont worry, im not saying US is crap or anything, but you cant say theyre on the same level as holland, i dont think. definitely on a player to player basis. i think the states best quality is that they play so well as a team. thats great that u did some history research on the states but how about holland?

and hey buddys, u cant beat someone in a discussion, people are allowed different opinions and points of views. and dont worry about calling it football or soccer… the name soccer came from england too, i think the only reason its kept here is because american football is so much more popular in america. doesnt really matter.

    having said all that
    HUP HOLLAND HUP

suck your own balls bastard. It’s A ONE TIME OCCURANCE. if holland kicked ass, how come they looked so shaky when we were on the offense, which was regularly and often. and the score 2-1 (or any scoreline where the winning team won by a single goal) shows you didnt kick ass, you just got lucky it didnt end 3-2, or even 3-1 if you fucking striker hadnt dived (coward) as we were owning your defenders as the game went on. that shows how much the U.S. has progressed in FOOTBALL (not soccer, jackass) and here are some stuff that proves it:
upset Spain, number one team that hadnt lost in nearly 2 years.
upset Brazil, the biggest footballing country, back in 98, and then put them to the brink last summer, what has Holland done bout something like that, eh? Your best performance against the samba boys was your semifinal game in the 98 WC, and I’ve seen the replays: only your equaliser was convincing.
upset ENGLAND, the very creators of football, twice, 1-0 in ’50, then 2-0 in 93.
not to mention we played in the confeds cup last summer, a competition you didnt even QUALIFY for, and as I said earlier, we beat the very team that knocked you outta the euro 08.

THESE ARE FACTS, MIKE. YOU CANT BEAT FACTS: I JUST BEAT YOU AND THEN PUT SOME MORE TNT IN THE BOMB!!! YOU CANT BEAT THAT!!!

I have to hand it for Ronaldinho – the brazil squad woul0d not be the same without his tricks and technique, but Dunga is picking players based on form, just as Capello does, and although dinho’s form is looking good, it is on a constant flux – which you cant afford if you are playing in the world cup. If AC milan goes far this season in the Champions League (which I hope they won’t) and keep putting the pressure on Inter, theres a big chance that he will travel to SA. But I have to say that Dunga is a tactical coach and the way the brazil team is shaping up right now I dont think there is a spot for Ronaldinho without comprimising the preformance of other teammates.

    Brad:

They are currently the no” 1 rated national team on the planet. They have won the EURO 2008 cup, and went through an impressive qualification stages in this WC.

    Just look at the roste:

Casilias, Puyol, Pique, Ramos, Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Torres, Silva, Villa….

Would you bet against those guys ?! And can you guide me to a better team ?!^^

They are just the “super team” in my opinion. If Rooney remains on his outstanding form, and somehow Terry & Ferdinand straighten their crap out, and a suitable GK is found, & Ashley Cole gains fitness soon enough, Englnad will have a big shot at the World Cup.

& If you are depending on the WC experience to decide the winner, then Brazil or Itali should have won it every time. Also, in the 1960’s world cup, England won the tournament with no appareant world cup experience where no one saw it coming, couldnt the same thing apply to Spain ?

it’s obvious that dunga is going to try the same tactics he used in copa america 2007, which is stiffling defence and counter attack, he was succesful then because he had the element of surprise on his side then, no team would have thought that the mighty brazil would resort to playing defence, i doubt that it’s going to work out for him again as most coaches should know by now, but then again how can you counter that, it should be intersesting to see if spain can handle that

Sorry, man for man, Spain is way too good. It’s up to Spain in my opinion, if they put it together they won’t be beaten.

suck your own balls bastard.

YOU CANT BEAT THAT!!!

take it easy, it was just a friendly…
it looked like (besides that brutal dejong tackle) dutch players were not very interested, especially in 50/50 balls. then when Holland takes out the d-mids vBommel and deJong US were allowed to get some chances.
but Hollands goals werent much anyways- penalty and deflection.

dont worry, im not saying US is crap or anything, but you cant say theyre on the same level as holland, i dont think. definitely on a player to player basis. i think the states best quality is that they play so well as a team. thats great that u did some history research on the states but how about holland?

and hey buddys, u cant beat someone in a discussion, people are allowed different opinions and points of views. and dont worry about calling it football or soccer… the name soccer came from england too, i think the only reason its kept here is because american football is so much more popular in america. doesnt really matter.

    having said all that
    HUP HOLLAND HUP

USA USA USA USA USA USA USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nice little recap buddy, dont worry, i was barely alive in the 80s too.

US, what stars? maybe donavon, US’s top scorer ever with 42 goals in 121 matches, and look at the teams they play… he is not top 50 in the world if you ask me.

actually, i think it could be said that a side like Holland’s side, with lots of top quality players, has a disadvantage to US in that these top players usually come with egos and US does well with their underdog prove-u-wrong team spirit, catching top and possibly arrogant players off guard (ahem, spain?).

  • Ali Ezzedine

Well, the US team is not neccesarily the underdog in many cases. Arent they no 11 or 9 in the current ranking ?! thats pretty good for a country who have baseball and basketball as their top national sports.

But – Spain I think are really top notch ! I stand by my opinion to have high expecations in the upcoming World Cup (at least they should get to the Finals) but too much arrogance will hurt though (i.e. Brazil in 2006 🙂 )

  • gooner-11

US is definitely not an underdog in their continent… hence their qualification for the CONFED CUP, which only 8 teams can possibly go to.

i would LOVE to see spain v holland final, just for the pure goodness of the playing!

  • Ali Ezzedine

    0 0

I mean Guzan and Howard are really top class. Also Spector is a very good defender (despite Westham’s recent bad results) isn’t he ? I hope he’s in te SA formation. There’s also Bocanegra,he has the most experience internationally for the US team (80 caps and 10 goals or something) Afterall, the US is a lot better than other teams. I reckon they will get far in the Worldcup, maybe the last 16 or even the semis. All depends on the form of the players.

Altidore has scored many outstanding goals with Hull? 2 goals.
    including CONFED CUP? 3 goals.

Yea, definitely not saying the States are bad, but I think any team would rather have anyone on the Holland squad less the keeper.

  • gooner-11

    0 0

    and maybe Donovan sometimes…

who would you rather have, Ronaldinho or Donovan?
actually, i think i would take Donavon.

  • Brad

    0 0

    Gooner:
Your most recent comment above my previous one just showed up; that’s why I’m just making an answer to it now.

I dont know who I’d rather. . . cant I just say I would take both? or is this one of those times where I have to make a choice between one or the other?

  • gooner-11

haha, yep, one or the other!

  • Brad

    dang it. . .
Donovan, then. I just cant stop thinking I would choose him.

maybe Graham Fisher could make an article about who to decide:

    “Donovan or Ronaldinho? You decide”
just like the one he made about lampard and gerrard.

  • Brad

by the way, Ali, bocanegra has 12 goals for the U.S. he scored against the Oranje back on Wednesday.
    He’s a good one too.

okay there are sum teams th@ peeps support coz of patriotism like brad supportin the USA,face it man they aint takin jack but as a fan you jus support n th@s wh@ i call being a fan-support no matter wh@ the odds are.the State’s team looks really menacing on the pitch and @ the confed cup showed they were no push overs, they most probably have gained confidence-this can work to their advantage or be their downfall.the odds are the states might coz an upset for some teams but it just doesnt have th@ ‘it’ factor to take home the coverted world cup trophy.brazil is also lacking on th@ ‘it’ factor.

  • Brad

You’re right blaze, we are fans of our respective countries and clubs, so everyone should respect that, no matter what.

  • Luis Palomino

Spain wont will the world cup thats forsure cause they cant even handle a simple counterattack. Brazil could win the world cup they got robinho kaka fabiano pato anderson elano they got world class players and know how to play the game. Jogo Bonito style ! (:

  • Brad

    0 0
